Upshire Area Info

Upshire Area Info

Upshire is located close to Junction 26 of the M25 in Essex, and is neighboured by Waltham Abbey and Copthall Green in the county of Essex. Outside the town centre you’ll find farm smallholdings and period detached properties set in an acre or two of land. However closer to Upshire Road you will find more modern 1960’s build properties with a variety of styles on offer, plenty of open spaces and a smattering of local convenience stores.

Although Upshire itself has no nucleus of retail outlets, nearby Waltham Abbey has no shortage of choice and so, non-car owners should take note, you’ll get fit carrying your purchases back home!

Living in Upshire guarantees good commuting routes, with the M25 and M11 on your doorstep and the A10 and the North Circular also close by. You are also halfway between Cheshunt Greater Anglia and Overground station, Theobalds Grove Overground station and Theydon Bois or Epping station on the London Underground Central Line.

Things To Do In Upshire

Anglers young and old should head straight for The Fishing Experience north of Upshire, at Galley Hill Road. The coaches are fully qualified and guarantee a great day out for all the family.

The Horseshoes Country Pub and Dining Room is situated on Horseshoe Hill, which offers exceptional views from their large garden across Epping Forest and North London. All their produce is sourced locally and prepared onsite, and their menu is sumptuous and reasonably priced.

There are a couple of riding schools nearby, including Just Riding, Woodredon Equestrian Centre and Harolds Park Farm and Riding Centre at Bumbles Green.

History of Upshire

Upshire is one of two hamlets – Copthall Green (Copt meaning hilltop) and Upshire or Upstra meaning Hilly Road. Upshire Hall is thought to be the oldest local property still in existence dating from the medieval period. The window pane in this listed building contains the signature of the Prince Regent. Warlies Park, former home to the Buxton Family (part of the famous brewery dynasty) subsequently became a Dr Barnardo’s home and is now owned by the Conservators of Epping Forest.

Upshire has seen many changes, none more so than the arrival of the M25 which effectively split it in two. Ironically despite the noise of the motorway Upshire is now a desirable place to live being so close to both the M25 and the M11.

Upshire has recently become linked with Jade Goody who lived in a detached property on Pick Hill with her husband and sons in the years before her death in 2009.
